Dinesh Trivedi becomes the new High Commissioner of India to Bangladesh, how will this appointment change the relations between the two countries?
Amidst efforts to bring relations with Bangladesh back on track, India has taken an important diplomatic decision. Former Union Minister Dinesh Trivedi has been appointed as the next High Commissioner of India to Bangladesh. This appointment is being considered an important step towards better relations between the two countries. It is being told that 75 year old Dinesh Trivedi can take charge soon. He will replace the current High Commissioner Prannoy Verma, who has now been made India’s Ambassador to Belgium and the European Union.
This appointment has come at a time when India and Bangladesh are working towards strengthening their relations. After the fall of Sheikh Hasina government in August 2024, there was some stagnation in relations between the two countries during the interim government led by Mohammad Yunus. However, after the formation of the new government under the leadership of Prime Minister Tariq Rehman in the beginning of this year, the situation has seen improvement. Now communication between the two countries is increasing and new avenues of cooperation are being explored, due to which stability seems to be returning in relations.

Politically, he was associated with the All India Trinamool Congress for a long time and represented the Barrackpore Lok Sabha constituency from 2009 to 2019. Later, in the year 2021, he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party.
Education and other experience
Dinesh Trivedi has studied MBA from the University of Texas (Austin), USA. He is also a trained pilot, which reflects his versatile personality. Before joining politics, he also ran his own air cargo business. Former High Commissioner Pranay Verma has played an important role in improving India-Bangladesh relations. In recent times, high level talks between the two countries have intensified.
