There is a new twist in the politics of Bihar, is this veteran leader moving forward on the path of merger?
Politics of Bihar attracts everyone. Even though the route to Lok Sabha passes through UP, the politics of Bihar also has great importance at the Centre. Once again there are signs of major change in the politics of Bihar. Discussions have intensified regarding the possible merger between Rashtriya Lok Morcha (RLM) chief Upendra Kushwaha and Bharatiya Janata Party. It is believed that this decision can give a new shape to the political equations before the proposed cabinet expansion in Bihar after the West Bengal Assembly elections.
Strategy behind merger speculation
According to political analysts, after not performing as expected in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, BJP kept Upendra Kushwaha with it by sending him to Rajya Sabha. After this, in the 2025 assembly elections, RLM contested the elections along with NDA and won four seats. Despite his Rajya Sabha tenure ending in March 2026, sending him again is being considered an indication that there may be some major political understanding behind this.
Sources claim that a proposal for party merger has been made by BJP, although no official statement has come out on this yet.
politics of son’s future
In this entire incident, the political future of Upendra Kushwaha’s son has also emerged as an important aspect. It is believed that Kushwaha wants to establish his son in the mainstream politics of Bihar. For this they are considering options like Cabinet or Legislative Council. In such a situation, coordination or merger with BJP can become a safe political path for them.
Growing restlessness within the party
Even within the RLM, the situation is not completely normal. Many MLAs and workers of the party seem uncomfortable with the decisions of the leadership. Especially the allegations of nepotism have created a rift in the organization. During the cabinet expansion in November 2025, the dissatisfaction had further increased due to the attempt to give priority to the son.
Apart from this, many MLAs are also worried that if the party merges, what will be their future in BJP. There is doubt about getting a ticket or maintaining political identity.
Organizational Challenges and Dissatisfaction
Lack of communication within the party has also become a major cause of dissatisfaction. Many MLAs allege that their opinion is not taken in important decisions. The absence of some MLAs in the ‘Litti-Chokha Party’ had made this dissatisfaction public. Although later an attempt was made to handle the situation by making changes in the organization, but complete balance could not be achieved.
What will happen next?
The biggest challenge before Upendra Kushwaha is to strike a balance between his party’s survival and political future. If they decide to merge with BJP, the independent existence of RLM may end. At the same time, merger can give him and his close leaders better opportunities in power.
In the coming days, it will be interesting to see which path Kushwaha chooses – to save his party or to play a new role by joining a big political alliance. This decision can have far reaching effects in the politics of Bihar.
