Big upheaval in Bengal? BJP government in 6 out of 8 exit polls, Mamata’s fort in danger

Kolkata: As the time for the results of West Bengal Assembly Elections 2026 is getting closer, the political temperature of the state has reached sky high. Whether day or night, there is an atmosphere of great tension and uncertainty in the whole of Bengal. Before the counting of votes on May 4, there is a ‘clash’ between Trinamool Congress (TMC) and BJP. While on one hand Mamata Banerjee herself is guarding the strong room, on the other hand BJP seems confident of its victory. Just before the results, Mamata Banerjee has received a ‘triple shock’, which has given sleepless nights to the TMC camp.

First shock: Exit poll data increased heartbeats

The exit poll results that came before the counting of votes have brought sweat on the forehead of TMC. Out of 8 major exit polls, 6 have clearly shown BJP leading, while only 2 surveys are in favor of TMC. According to these estimates, the position of Mamata Banerjee, who has been in power for the last 15 years, seems to be in danger this time. Although Mamata Banerjee has dismissed these figures as a conspiracy to create ‘psychological pressure’, the uneasiness can be clearly seen among TMC workers.

Second blow: crushing legal defeat from Calcutta High Court

TMC has suffered another major blow on the legal front. The party had challenged the deployment of central staff during the counting of votes in the Calcutta High Court. But the court rejected TMC’s petition outright and approved the decision of the Election Commission. The court clearly said that transparency and strict monitoring of elections is necessary and the role of central observers is important in this. This tough stance of the court spoiled the efforts of TMC in which it was demanding deployment of local employees.

Third blow: Election Commission’s rebuke on EVM controversy

The third and biggest high-voltage drama took place regarding EVMs and strong rooms. TMC alleged that strong rooms were opened without notice and their agents were not allowed inside. The situation became such that Mamata Banerjee herself remained frozen outside the strong room for several hours. However, the Election Commission has termed these allegations as completely baseless. The Commission clarified that the video going viral was part of the official process of postal ballot and it was already known to all the parties. This cleanliness and strictness of the Commission has put to rest TMC’s claims of ‘rigging’.
