First meeting of BRICS Women’s Working Group, emphasis on women-led development
New Delhi, May 1. The Ministry of Women and Child Development organized the first inaugural meeting of the BRICS Women’s Working Group under India’s rotating chairmanship of the BRICS group on 30 April virtually. The meeting emphasized on strengthening women-led development and reiterated India’s commitment to recognize women as key drivers of economic growth, governance and social change.
Participation of BRICS countries and partner institutions
Representatives of BRICS member countries participated in this meeting. Apart from officials from various ministries and departments of the Government of India, knowledge partners like UN Women and Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) also participated. Caroline Khongwar Deshmukh, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Women and Child Development, welcomed all the participants and presented the outline of the discussion.
Discussion based on the topic of India’s presidency
Inspired by the theme of India’s BRICS Chairmanship ‘Building Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Stability’, many important issues were discussed in the meeting. In this, global level shared challenges related to women were divided into four major areas. These included the role of women in governance and leadership, financial and digital inclusion, women’s entrepreneurship and skill development, and the role of women in climate action, food security and nutrition.
India’s emphasis on women-led development
It was underlined in the meeting that women-led development is one of India’s priorities. During the discussion it was reiterated that women are important forces not only for economic development but also for governance and social change.
Member country support and upcoming events
BRICS member states appreciated India’s leadership and supported these priorities in the spirit of cooperation and shared learning. The findings of these discussions will be taken forward in the upcoming BRICS Women’s Working Group meeting (6–7 July 2026, Kochi) and the BRICS Women’s Ministerial Meeting (8–9 July 2026).
