‘Beating the retreat’ is a centuries old military tradition

Interestingly, “beating the retreat” is an old military tradition. In earlier wars, when the sun went down, the battle would be stopped, a song of cessation would be played, and then the armies of both sides would return to their camps. The concept of ‘Beating the Retreat’ ceremony has been created from this old method. Military forces of many countries around the world have such a program. India has also included this tradition in the Republic Day celebrations. So now the Chief of Army Staff asks the President to return to his camp after the ceremony.
