Bengal Elections: Mother’s challenge to ‘Mamata’ in TNC’s stronghold, Ratna Debnath wins in Panihati by 28 thousand votes.
Kolkata, 4 May. There was a big upheaval in the results of West Bengal Assembly elections declared on Monday. On one hand, BJP came in a position to form the government with a huge majority, while on the other hand, TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee had to face a crushing defeat at the hands of BJP’s Subhendu Adhikari from her traditional Bhawanipur seat.
Ratna is the mother of a junior doctor who was the victim of brutality in RG Kar Medical College.
The matter was not limited to this only, but TMC also faced misfortune in Panihati, one of the most popular seats of the state. Panihati assembly seat, located in North 24 Parganas district, is an important urban constituency, which is part of the Dumdum Lok Sabha. It had traditionally been a Trinamool Congress (TMC) stronghold, with Nirmal Ghosh emerging victorious in 2016 and 2021.
Ratna Debnath’s victory was already considered certain.
This time in the election results, BJP handed over the candidature to Ratna Debnath and her victory was just being formally announced. From this seat, Ratna Debnath defeated TMC’s Tirthankar Ghosh by a margin of 28,836 votes. Ratna Debnath had not chosen to enter politics. She was happy with her family.

But, the brutality that happened to her daughter at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, paved the way for her, through which she first reached Panahati and now she is also going to the Assembly. That is to say, she made herself a part of the system, so that her own and others’ daughters not only get a safe environment but also no one is treated unfairly.

Ratna’s candidature made a big impact on the hearts of women
When BJP finalized Ratna Debnath as its candidate, her victory was considered certain from that very moment. Ratna Debnath’s candidature in this election has made a big impact on the hearts of women. During the election campaign, the way women from every section welcomed Ratna with hugs and tears and promised to stand with her in this fight, it proved to be a big factor in the elections. This time, not belonging to any party but being a mother, the women decided to support a mother, which was clearly visible in the election campaign.
The medical college incident was raised loudly by BJP in the election campaign.
It is noteworthy that during the assembly election campaign, BJP strongly raised the incident of brutality with a female junior doctor in RG Kar Medical College Hospital. During the election campaign itself, women supporting different parties united and announced to stand with Ratna in the fight for justice. Considering ‘Abhaya’ as their daughter, every woman stood with Ratna in this justice. At the same time, PM Modi said that as soon as he comes to power, all the files of rape and atrocities against women including RG Kar will be reopened. This also had a wide impact on the public mind.
