All is not well in Team India? Former Indian cricketer made a big claim about Gautam Gambhir
New Delhi: Everything is not going well inside the Indian cricket team, this has been claimed by former Indian cricketer Atul Wasan. He has given many shocking statements regarding the current environment of Team India. Vasan says that all the players of the team are not feeling comfortable with the strict working style and sharp personality of head coach Gautam Gambhir. Although the Indian team has achieved great success in limited overs cricket in recent years, Vasan has still talked about the tension within the dressing room.
During a conversation on Vicky Lalwani’s YouTube show, Atul Wasan claimed that some players of Team India are not happy with the working style of Gautam Gambhir. He said that Gambhir’s method is very strict and disciplined, which not every player can accept easily. Wasan said that when a person with a strong personality leads any team, it is natural to have personal likes and dislikes among the players. He also said that as long as the team keeps winning, such things do not come to light much, but after defeat, questions start arising.
Pointed to players’ dissatisfaction
According to him, “Not every player can be happy. There will definitely be some players who are feeling the pressure. If the results keep coming then everything seems fine, but after the defeat, the same decisions become the reason for criticism.” When Vasan was asked if he knew any players who were dissatisfied with Gambhir’s leadership, he refused to take names directly. However, he indicated that some players within the team were feeling isolated.
He said that some players will not say anything openly, but a lot is going on internally. According to Vasan, if the team continues to win then the coach’s decisions are considered correct, even if some players are sidelined. He also said that cricket is a team game and in such an environment the voice of any one player does not matter much. If the coach makes the team successful, then ultimately his decisions are considered correct.
Vasan and Gambhir’s relationship was in controversies earlier also
There has been talk of differences between Atul Vasan and Gautam Gambhir since long. When Vasan was in the role of selector in Delhi cricket, Gambhir was removed from the captaincy of the Delhi team. At that time this matter was in great controversy. Gambhir later claimed that he was not given proper information about this decision. Since then there has been tension in their relationship.
Mixed results during Gambhir’s tenure
After Rahul Dravid, Gautam Gambhir took over the post of head coach of the Indian team on 10 July 2024. After becoming his coach, India performed brilliantly in limited overs cricket. The Indian team created history by winning the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, Champions Trophy 2025 and Asia Cup 2025.
India became the first team to win such big titles consecutively. But the team’s performance in Test cricket was not that impressive. India had to face defeat in the home series against New Zealand and South Africa. Apart from this, the team also lost the Border-Gavaskar Trophy to Australia after 10 years.
Senior players also retired
Many big changes were also seen during Gambhir’s coaching tenure. Experienced spinner Ravichandran Ashwin retired from international cricket during the Australia tour. After some time in May 2025, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma also said goodbye to Test cricket. With the retirement of these two players, a great era of Indian Test batting ended.
Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma was also removed from the ODI captaincy, even though he had won the Champions Trophy for India in the same year. Later this responsibility was handed over to Shubman Gill. After these incidents, discussions regarding the atmosphere and decisions within Team India have continued to be intense.
