Shadow of doping on Team India’s stars, NADA notice to Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shefali Verma

Troubles seem to be increasing for two rising stars of Indian cricket, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shefali Verma. The National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) has issued official notices to both these players for violation of ‘Whereabouts Failure’. According to the report, both the players were not available for the dope test at the scheduled time last year (2025), which is considered to be the first major lapse of the rules. This information has also been given to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the International Cricket Council (ICC).

What is the whole matter? Why did you get the notice?

Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shefali Verma are part of the Registered Testing Pool (RTP) of NADA. Under this rule, players have to inform their location every quarter so that the Dope Control Officer (DCO) can test them without any prior notice.

  • Yashasvi Jaiswal: When the officers reached his address on 17 December 2025, he was not present there.

  • Shefali Verma: On 7 November 2025, Shefali was also not found at her appointed place. NADA had sought clarification from both in February this year, but after not getting any reply, it has now sent a formal notice seeking reply within 7 days.

3 mistakes and 4 years ban: What do the rules say?

According to anti-doping rules (Article 2.4), if an athlete misses his or her dope test three times within 12 months or provides false location information, it is considered a ‘doping violation’.

  • A warning is given on the first and second offense.

  • If there is a third default, a ban of 2 to 4 years can be imposed on the player. This is the first official missed test for Yashasvi and Shefali, which means that now they will have to be extremely cautious for the next one year.

BCCI’s stance: Emphasis on ‘Olympic protocol’

BCCI has confirmed receiving the notice from NADA. “We have received the information and are investigating how the lapse occurred. Since cricket is now part of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, we will have to strictly follow all doping protocols,” a senior board source said. Currently 13 players of Team India (which include Shubman Gill, Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah) are in this monitoring list of NADA.
