Easy path to victory in Tamil Nadu, CM post cleared by 120 MLAs!
TVK’s most recent support came from the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML). IUML legislature party leader SSB Syed Farooq Basha and deputy leader A.M. Shahjahan formally announced his support to the TVK government by handing over a signed letter to Governor-in-charge Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar.
Earlier, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) had also announced its support to Vijay, after which TVK was successful in gathering the required numbers to form the government.
According to the latest figures, TVK now has the support of a total of 120 MLAs. These include 108 MLAs from TVK, 5 from Congress, 2 each from CPI and CPI(M), 2 from VCK and 2 from IUML.
Voting was held in a single phase on April 23 for all 234 assembly seats in Tamil Nadu. The elections saw a tough contest between DMK, AIADMK, Nam Tamilar Katchi (NTK) and TVK.
In the results declared on May 4, TVK had emerged as the largest party by winning 108 seats. However, after Vijay decided to retain one of the two seats won, the party’s effective strength came down to 107.
Since the election results were declared, political activities had intensified in Chennai and TVK contacted many parties for government formation. CPI and CPI(M) were the first to announce their support to Vijay. After this, Congress also decided to come with Vijay and now with the support of VCK and IUML, Vijay has easily crossed the majority mark.
According to sources, Vijay has sought an immediate meeting with Governor Arlekar, as the Governor is going to leave for Kerala soon. The TVK leadership can formally stake claim to form the government by submitting letters of support from allies.
TVK general secretary Adhar Arjuna told reporters that Vijay would soon take oath as the next Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.
