Suryakumar Yadav’s captaincy in danger, Sanju Samson can become the new T20 captain of Team India

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is preparing for a major change in the T20 format. According to the latest media reports, T20 World Cup 2026 winning captain Suryakumar Yadav may be removed from the captaincy. In his place, there is a strong discussion about handing over the command of Team India to Kerala’s star wicketkeeper-batsman and currently playing for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) Sanju Samson. Earlier, Shreyas Iyer’s name was leading in this race, but now Samson has emerged as the strongest contender.

Surya’s poor form becomes a problem, increased confidence in ‘Player of the Tournament’ Samson

Even though India won the 2026 T20 World Cup on home soil under the captaincy of Suryakumar Yadav, his performance with the bat has been very ordinary in the last few months. With only one half-century in the World Cup and only 195 runs in 10 matches in the ongoing IPL 2026, the selectors are now looking towards the future. On the other hand, Sanju Samson has proved his worth by becoming the ‘Player of the Tournament’ in the World Cup 2026. Samson’s bat is on fire in IPL 2026 too, where he has scored 2 centuries and more than 400 runs so far.

Why did Shreyas Iyer lag behind? What is the new rule of BCCI?

There was talk that Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer was the first choice for this post, but according to a report in ‘Dainik Jagran’, Samson has the upper hand. The main reason for this is that Sanju has been a part of the T20 team setup for the last two years, while Shreyas Iyer has not played any T20 International for India since December 2023. The selection committee believes that it would be more logical to hand over the leadership to a player who is familiar with the current environment of the team.

A big decision may be taken on the tour of Ireland and England

BCCI will select the team for the tour of Ireland and England immediately after IPL 2026. It is believed that Sanju Samson can be made the vice-captain of Suryakumar Yadav on these tours, which will be the first step towards becoming a full-time captain in the future. If Suryakumar’s form does not improve, then the transfer of captaincy can be seen during the England series itself.
