New ‘aftercare’ scheme will support orphan youth in Delhi, they will get full support from education to employment.
Delhi Government has taken a big initiative for the youth coming out of child protection homes and orphanages after completing the age of 18 years. The Government has approved “Aftercare Scheme for Young Persons” which aims to make such youth self-reliant and provide them with a secure future.
Every year around 150 to 200 youth come out of child protection institutions in Delhi. When they leave institutions after the age of 18, they have to face economic, social and mental challenges. The new plan has been prepared keeping these problems in mind.
Budget set at Rs 3.5 crore
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said that the government’s aim is to give a respectable life and self-reliant future to these youth. Under the scheme the youth should-
- assistance in higher education
- Skill Development and Vocational Training
- Counseling and emotional support
- Internship and employment opportunities
- Career Guidance and Personality Development
- Rehabilitation and financial assistance if needed
The government has also set a budget of Rs 3.5 crore for this scheme in the current financial year.
Chief Minister met children on Mother’s Day
On Sunday, on the occasion of Mother’s Day, the Chief Minister visited the “Village Cottage Home” run by the Women and Child Development Department located in Lajpat Nagar and met the children living there. He said that at present there are 88 child protection homes operating in Delhi, which are jointly run by the government and various non-government organizations. In these institutions, children are provided care, protection, education, rehabilitation and other necessary facilities till the age of 18 years.
Separate aftercare homes for boys and girls
Separate aftercare homes for boys and girls also operate in Delhi. Here youth above 18 years of age are provided accommodation, food, education assistance and other necessary facilities, so that they can move forward with confidence in the society.
Monitoring will be done at state and district level
Special committees will be formed at the state and district levels for effective operation and monitoring of the scheme.
- “State Aftercare Committee” will be formed at the state level under the chairmanship of the Secretary of the Women and Child Development Department.
- “District Aftercare Committee” will function at the district level under the chairmanship of the concerned District Magistrate.
The objective of these committees will be to provide timely assistance to the youth and ensure regular review of the scheme.
