The process of transfer of land to BSF for border fencing will be completed in 45 days.
West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has taken an important decision as soon as he assumed power. He announced that the process of transferring land to the Border Security Force (BSF) for border fencing will be started immediately and will be completed within the next 45 days. With this decision, a step has been taken towards fulfilling a major election promise of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to stop illegal infiltration from Bangladesh.
Chairing the first cabinet meeting at Nabanna (state secretariat), days after the BJP’s massive victory in the assembly elections, Subhendu Adhikari said the entire land required for fencing the India-Bangladesh border will be handed over to the BSF.
Suvendu Adhikari said, “Today in our very first cabinet meeting, we have decided to transfer the land to BSF. This process is starting from today and will be completed in the next 45 days. After this, BSF will complete the fencing work on the border and the problem of illegal infiltration will soon end to a great extent.”
Infiltration had emerged as a major political issue during the assembly elections. The BJP had repeatedly accused the Trinamool Congress (TMC) of keeping the border open to Bangladeshi infiltrators due to ‘appeasement politics’. During the election campaign, Amit Shah had promised that if BJP comes to power, all the land required for border fencing will be handed over to BSF within 45 days.
West Bengal has a 4,097 km long border with Bangladesh. According to the Union Home Ministry, about 3,240 km of this border has already been fenced, while about 850 km of the border, including 175 km of inaccessible areas, is still unfenced. The BJP has long alleged that the fencing process was hampered due to delays in land transfer by the previous Trinamool Congress government. At the same time, TMC says that before installing the fence, it is necessary to resolve the issues related to local land and people’s livelihood.
Apart from border fencing, Suvendu Adhikari’s first cabinet also approved the implementation of Ayushman Bharat and other pending central schemes in West Bengal. He also announced that pending applications of various welfare schemes including Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana 3.0 will be disposed of on priority basis. Suvendu Adhikari alleged that the Trinamool Congress had created obstacles in the implementation of central schemes to deprive people of government benefits.
