Big fraud in mass marriage scheme in Kanpur

During the investigation of labor department’s mass marriage scheme in Kanpur division, 76 workers were found ineligible. Investigation revealed that some people had applied again to avail government assistance despite their daughters being already married.

Kanpur: Major irregularities have come to light in the mass marriage scheme of Uttar Pradesh Building and Construction Workers Welfare Board. 76 workers who applied in Kanpur division were found ineligible in the investigation. In most of these cases, the daughters were already married, but the application was made again to avail the benefits of the scheme.

Layers of scheme abuse revealed in investigation

A total of 177 applications were received by the Labor Department for the mass marriage ceremony to be organized on May 14. These applications were examined by labor inspectors, in which 76 applications were found ineligible.

During the investigation, many such cases came to light where workers had already married their daughters, but were trying to get them included again in the mass marriage scheme to get government financial assistance.

Worker Amarnath Kuril had applied for the marriage of his daughter Mahima, but investigation revealed that her marriage had already taken place on April 18. Similarly, the marriage of laborer Jaipal’s daughter Goldie was also solemnized on March 13.

Financial assistance is available under the scheme

Under the Girl Marriage Assistance Scheme of Uttar Pradesh Building and Construction Workers Welfare Board, financial assistance is given to eligible workers. At present, under the scheme, an assistance of Rs 85 thousand is given on the daughter’s marriage, while Rs 15 thousand is spent on clothes and events.

Earlier this assistance amount was Rs 65 thousand. The objective of the scheme is to provide support in the marriage of daughters of economically weaker labor families.

Mass wedding ceremony will be held on 14th May

A mass marriage ceremony will be organized by the Labor Department on May 14 at the ITI Ground in Pandu Nagar, Kanpur. In the programme, 101 couples from six districts of Kanpur division – Kanpur Nagar, Kanpur Dehat, Farrukhabad, Kannauj, Auraiya and Etawah – will be married.

Labor and Employment Minister Anil Rajbhar will attend the program as the chief guest. Minister of State Manohar Lal has also been invited.

Fraud worth crores has already come to light

Even before this, cases of irregularities have come to light in the Girls Assistance Scheme. In January 2024, the web portal was logged in using the ID of a departmental officer and about Rs 10.78 crore was paid to 201 ineligible people.

The investigation of this matter is still going on. Assistant Labor Commissioner Ram Lakhan Patel said that eligibility is decided only after scrutiny of all the applications and names found ineligible have been removed from the list.
