New Delhi, 17 May. The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has defended the on-screen marking (OSM) system amid concerns over the Class 12 evaluation process, saying it was introduced to improve transparency and standardization. The board has also rejected the use of AI in the evaluation process.
Regarding the CBSE Class 12 evaluation process, School Education Secretary Sanjay Kumar said, ‘The concerns of the students are our main focus. This technology was not ready in 2014, but now it has been restarted. ICAI, IB and Cambridge also adopt similar systems.
The clarification from the board came after several students alleged low marks, unverified answer sheets and discrepancies in the 2026 board results, triggering criticism of the digital assessment process.
Announcement of multi-stage review system for improving answer sheets
In this sequence, CBSE has announced a multi-stage review system for those students who want to improve their answer sheets. From May 19 to May 22, students can apply for a scanned copy of their verified answer sheet before requesting verification or re-evaluation.
minus fees Rs 100 per copy and Rs 25 per question
Under the multi-stage review system, the fees have been reduced to Rs 100 per copy and Rs 25 per question. The board said that if the marks increase after review then the fees will be refunded. Officials said around 98.6 lakh answer sheets were checked this year, of which around 13,000 were found to have mistakes and were later rechecked manually.
After OSM training, 77,000 teachers took part in the investigation work.
CBSE said that under OSM, each answer is checked separately, and the invigilators are trained using previous years’ papers and marking scheme. After the training, about 77,000 teachers took part in the testing. The board also admitted that there were some initial problems while starting the system, but later the system got fixed.
Officials also said that Artificial Intelligence (AI) was not used in the investigation process. “There has been no change in assessment, only standardization has been implemented,” he said. It was also told that OSM will continue in future examinations. With millions of students relying on their Class 12 marks for college admissions, the way CBSE is handling assessment concerns is expected to be closely watched going forward.
