IN-SPACe ready to transfer PSLV technology to Indian private companies
In a major step towards promoting private participation in the Indian space sector, the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Center (IN-SPACe) has opened the full technology transfer process of Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) to private Indian industries.
IN-SPACe said in its statement that this opportunity is for capable Indian companies who have successfully handled multi-disciplinary turn-key projects and who wish to provide commercial launch services to the global medium-weight satellite launch market by adopting PSLV technology.
PSLV is considered to be the most reliable and successful launch vehicle of the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO). Through this, India has so far successfully launched hundreds of foreign and domestic satellites. PSLV is also known internationally for its low cost and high reliability.
According to IN-SPACe, infrastructure and operational support will also be provided by ISRO after technology transfer to selected private companies. This assistance will be available for a stipulated period of 30 months or till the manufacturing and launch of two PSLV vehicles by the selected company, whichever is completed earlier.
This initiative aims to strengthen the Indian private space industry and make them competitive in the global launch services market. The government has been emphasizing on increasing the participation of private companies in the space sector for the last few years.
However, IN-SPACe has clarified that the transfer of PSLV technology will be limited to Indian private entities only and certain eligibility conditions have been fixed for this. According to these conditions, it is mandatory for the company applying for technology transfer or any of its consortium members to have at least five years of experience in the space or aerospace sector.
Apart from this, the annual turnover of the company in any three of the last five years must be more than Rs 400 crore or the valuation of the company must be at least Rs 1,000 crore.
Experts believe that this decision will give a new impetus to the private space industry in India and the country will be able to further strengthen its share in the global satellite launch market. Besides, this step is also considered important towards making India self-reliant in the field of space technology.
