Following the instructions of the Election Commission, 82 transferred officers will be re-appointed.
Kolkata Police personnel who were punitively transferred during the 2016 Assembly elections for strictly following the instructions of the Election Commission of India, playing an impartial role and ignoring the verbal instructions of the ruling party leaders, have now started the process of recalling them by the newly elected government.
According to the information, in 2016, a total of 82 lower level police officers were punitively transferred and sent to different districts of the state. In the last ten years, none of these officers were brought back to Kolkata Police again.
At that time Rajiv Kumar was the Police Commissioner of Kolkata. After the Bhangar area was included in the Kolkata Police jurisdiction in January 2024, the then Police Commissioner and currently suspended IPS officer Vineet Kumar Goyal had attempted to bring these 82 officers back into the Kolkata Police to meet the need for additional manpower.
However, his proposal could not be approved at the senior level.
Now the current Police Commissioner Ajay Nanda has restarted the formal process for re-appointment of these 82 officers. He has sent a letter to the State Home Department seeking permission to bring these personnel back under Kolkata Police.
Further, a request has also been made to transfer some of the State Police personnel to Kolkata Police to temporarily meet the shortage of staff in the police force till the completion of the new recruitment process.
This proposal is currently awaiting the approval of the Home Department.
At present, 673 posts of Sub-Inspector are vacant in Kolkata Police, due to which there is additional pressure on the police force. Officials believe that this shortage will be removed to a great extent by the return of old experienced officers.
