Indian Navy’s Major Operation In The Indian Ocean Ins Kolkata Foils Suspected Piracy Attempt

The Indian Navy foiled a suspected piracy attempt in the western Indian Ocean. The Indian Navy’s warship INS Kolkata, after receiving information about suspicious activities around the merchant ship MV Mashallah 1, took immediate action and prevented a possible attack.

According to the Navy, INS Kolkata was deployed on missions in the Western Indian Ocean and Gulf of Aden area at that time. As soon as pirate activity was reported in the vicinity of the ship, the warship launched a rapid investigation and security operation.

In this operation, the helicopter deployed on INS Kolkata was used, while the ship’s boarding team went to the spot and conducted search and investigation operation. The Navy said that due to the timely action taken, the merchant ship MV Mashallah 1 remained safe and a possible piracy incident was averted.

After the incident, the Indian Navy reiterated that it is fully committed to the security of maritime merchant vessels, anti-piracy operations and maintaining the safety of international sea lanes.

The Indian Navy has been continuously conducting anti-piracy missions in the Gulf of Aden area since 2008. Naval warships regularly conduct surveillance and security operations in this strategic maritime area, where international merchant vessels transit.

INS Kolkata is counted among the most modern and powerful warships of the Indian Navy. It was inducted into the Navy by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in August 2014.

It is one of the largest indigenously built Guided Missile Destroyer warships. The ship is fitted with state-of-the-art gunnery systems, anti-submarine warfare weapons, air defense missiles, surface-to-surface missiles and modern radar systems.

INS Kolkata also has advanced digital networks and combat management systems, which enable various weapons and sensors to operate in an integrated manner during combat. The ship has extensively used indigenous technology, which is considered a significant achievement for India’s defense production sector.

According to the Navy, the warship is capable of operating two Seeking or Chetak helicopters. Apart from this, modern navigation, communication and power management systems have also been installed on the ship.

The Indian Navy is continuously strengthening its strategic presence in the Indian Ocean region. In recent years, India has made its naval operations more proactive in the face of piracy, drone threats and international maritime security challenges.

This latest action by INS Kolkata is being considered an important success towards ensuring the security of international maritime trade routes.
