Massive fire in Kenya’s girls school, 16 students killed; more than 50 injured

Kenya: The massive fire that broke out in the hostel at Utumishi Girls Academy in Gilgil, Nakuru County, Kenya has shocked the entire country. According to initial reports, the fire broke out in the girls’ dormitory around 3:30 am on Thursday. So far, the death of 16 girl students has been confirmed in the accident, while 74 other girl students are injured and their treatment is going on in various hospitals.

According to the Kenya Red Cross, emergency services, ambulance teams and psychological support workers rushed to the scene as soon as the fire was reported. Rescue and relief operations were immediately launched while the administration took control of the entire complex.




  • Initially, the death of 10 girl students was confirmed, but later six more girl students succumbed to serious burns. According to officials, the condition of many girl students still remains critical. The injured are being treated at St. Joseph Hospital and other medical centres.

    After the accident, Kenya’s State Department for Children Services has announced the deployment of counseling experts to help the surviving girls, families of the deceased, teachers and relief workers. The department said that special psychosocial support services will be provided for the mental health and emotional rehabilitation of the affected people.
