Yogi govt plans 750-km mega expressway linking western and eastern UP across 22 districts

The Uttar Pradesh Government has formally begun the land acquisition process for the proposed Shamli-Gorakhpur Expressway, a mega infrastructure project expected to become the longest expressway in the state and one of the biggest road corridors in India.

Stretching approximately 750 kilometres, the proposed expressway will be significantly longer than the 594-km Ganga Expressway and is expected to connect western, central and eastern Uttar Pradesh through a single high-speed transport corridor.

Officials said the project has entered a crucial implementation phase with land acquisition work beginning in Shamli district. Authorities have also imposed restrictions on land transactions in areas falling under the proposed alignment to prevent speculative buying and artificial inflation of land prices before acquisition proceedings are completed.

The ambitious expressway project is expected to pass through around 22 districts, improving road connectivity between western UP and eastern regions bordering Bihar. The corridor is being seen as a major infrastructure push by the government ahead of future economic and industrial expansion plans in the state.

According to officials familiar with the project, the expressway is expected to significantly reduce travel time between Shamli and Gorakhpur while strengthening freight movement, logistics connectivity and regional economic integration. The route is also likely to improve access to agricultural markets, industrial clusters and religious tourism destinations across Uttar Pradesh.

The proposed corridor is part of the state government’s broader strategy to develop Uttar Pradesh into a major expressway-linked economy. Over the past few years, the state has aggressively expanded high-speed road infrastructure through projects such as the Purvanchal Expressway, Bundelkhand Expressway and Ganga Expressway.

The Shamli-Gorakhpur Expressway is expected to provide direct high-speed connectivity to several districts in western, central and eastern Uttar Pradesh that currently depend on congested highways and slower state road networks.

Officials said restrictions on land registration and transfer have been introduced in affected zones to ensure transparent acquisition and avoid disputes during compensation proceedings. Survey and mapping activities are also reportedly underway in several districts falling along the proposed route.

The project is likely to require large-scale land acquisition due to its length and multi-district alignment. Authorities are expected to hold consultations with local landowners and administrative officials as the process advances.

Infrastructure experts say the expressway could play a major role in reducing transportation costs, attracting industrial investment and boosting regional trade corridors within the state. Improved connectivity may also support future logistics parks, warehousing hubs and manufacturing clusters along the route.

The Uttar Pradesh government has in recent years heavily focused on road infrastructure expansion as part of its development agenda, positioning expressways as key drivers of industrial growth and employment generation.

Further details regarding project cost, timeline and district-wise alignment are expected to emerge as acquisition and planning work progresses.
