Major fire breaks out at scrap godown in Bhiwandi, firefighters battle flames for hours
A massive fire broke out at a scrap warehouse in Maharashtra’s Bhiwandi area of Thane district on Friday evening, triggering panic among local residents as thick plumes of black smoke engulfed the surrounding locality. Firefighters rushed to the spot soon after the blaze was reported, while police launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the incident.
According to officials, the fire erupted around 6 pm at a scrap godown located near the steam water supply gate in the Bhiwandi area. The flames rapidly spread across the warehouse due to the highly combustible materials stored inside, raising fears of a larger industrial disaster in the densely populated belt known for warehouses and storage units.
Senior Police Inspector Vinayak Gaikwad of Shanti Nagar Police Station confirmed that multiple fire brigade teams were deployed to contain the blaze. “A fire broke out in a scrap warehouse located near the steam water supply gate at around 6 pm. Two fire brigade tankers have been called to extinguish the fire. The operation is currently underway. The cause of the fire is not yet known and will be investigated,” he said.
Visuals from the area showed giant flames and thick smoke rising high into the sky, causing concern among nearby residents and shopkeepers. Authorities immediately cordoned off the area as a precautionary measure to prevent civilians from entering the danger zone. Traffic movement near the affected stretch was also partially disrupted due to the emergency response operation.
Officials said no injuries or casualties had been reported till the latest update, providing relief amid fears that workers or labourers could have been trapped inside the warehouse. Firefighters continued cooling operations late into the evening to prevent the fire from reigniting.
Bhiwandi, often referred to as one of India’s largest warehousing hubs, has witnessed several fire incidents in recent years due to overcrowded storage facilities, poor fire safety compliance, electrical overload and illegal storage practices. Industrial and warehouse fires remain a recurring concern in the Thane region, especially during periods of extreme summer heat.
Police officials stated that forensic and electrical inspections may be conducted after the fire is fully extinguished. Investigators are expected to examine whether a short circuit, chemical reaction or negligence triggered the blaze.
The incident once again raises serious questions over fire safety preparedness inside warehouses and industrial storage facilities operating in Maharashtra’s rapidly expanding logistics sector.
