Plan to make municipalities dumping yard-free in Andhra
Andhra Pradesh government is working on a plan to make municipalities dumping yard-free. Minister Ponnaguru Narayan said that waste to energy and biogas plants will be converted into energy and compost, which will promote cleanliness.
The Andhra Pradesh government has taken a major step towards completely revamping the urban sanitation system in the state. State Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister Ponguru Narayan has announced that municipalities across Andhra Pradesh will be converted into “dumping yard-free zones” in a phased manner. The objective of this scheme is to eliminate heaps of waste and convert it into energy and useful products.
This initiative is part of the “Swachhandhra” scheme of the state government, under which modern and sustainable waste management systems are being developed in urban areas.
Aim to make municipalities dumping yard-free
Minister Ponguru Narayan said the government aims to transform all municipalities in the state into model cities where there are no open dumping yards. For this, scientific and technological based waste management system is being implemented.
He said that the government’s focus is not only on removing garbage, but on converting it into useful resources. Under this thinking, waste will be converted into energy, fertilizer and biogas.
Expansion of waste-to-energy and biogas plants
The state government has already started waste-to-energy plants in Visakhapatnam and Guntur, which are working successfully. Through these plants, electricity is being produced from the city’s waste.
Apart from this, construction work of six new waste-to-energy and processing plants is going on. The government aims to ensure that modern waste processing facilities are available in every major city in the future.
Establishment of “Fresh Waste Plants” in 107 municipalities
The state government is setting up new “Fresh Waste Plants” in 107 municipalities. The objective of these plants is to scientifically process the daily waste.
Through these plants, about 5,385 tonnes of waste will be converted into compost and biogas every day. This scheme will not only help in environmental protection but will also benefit the agriculture and energy sector.
Inspection Tour: Review in Kondapalli and Ibrahimpatnam
Minister Ponguru Narayana and MLA Vasanth Krishna Prasad visited Kondapalli and Ibrahimpatnam areas of NTR district. During this, he inspected the new fresh waste plant and compressed biogas (CBG) plant.
During the inspection, the Minister reviewed the functioning, capacity and technical arrangements of the plants. He directed the officials to complete the projects on time so that the public can get its benefits as soon as possible.
Previous government accused of 150 lakh tonnes of waste
Making serious allegations against the previous government, Minister Narayan said that the previous government collected “waste tax” but left behind about 150 lakh tonnes of garbage in the cities.
He said that this garbage has now become a big challenge for the state, but the present coalition government is committed to clean it in a phased manner. The government aims to eliminate this entire backlog in the coming time.
New projects worth Rs 59.85 crore approved
Andhra Pradesh government has approved new projects worth Rs 59.85 crore to strengthen the waste management system. Under this, new compressed biogas (CBG) plants will be set up in Rajamahendravaram, Nellore, Guntur, Ongole and Ibrahimpatnam.
Apart from this, an additional investment of Rs 9.45 crore will be made to upgrade the existing plant located in Vijayawada.
All these projects will transform urban waste management into a modern and energy-productive model.
Big goal of producing energy from waste
According to the government’s plan, the total capacity of all these plants will be around 125 tonnes per day. Each unit will be able to process about 25 tonnes of waste per day.
Through this process, waste will be converted into biogas and clean energy, which will reduce dependence on traditional energy sources. This model will not only be beneficial for the environment, but will also help in making cities energy self-reliant.
“waste to wealth” policy
Minister Ponguru Narayan said the state government’s policy is clear—”creating wealth from waste”. He says that the waste which was earlier considered a problem can now become an economic and energy resource.
He said that this initiative will bring positive changes in all three areas – environment protection, cleanliness and employment generation.
Initiatives related to Swachh Andhra campaign
This entire scheme is an important part of the “Swachhandhra” campaign of the state. Its objective is to make Andhra Pradesh among the cleanest and modern urban states of the country.
The government believes that if the waste management system becomes stronger, not only will the cities remain clean, but the standard of living of the citizens will also improve.
