Karnataka: DK Shivakumar calls on Governor Gehlot ahead of CLP meeting.

Bengaluru: Deputy Chief Minister and Karnataka Congress President DK Shivakumar on Saturday we met Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot at Lok Bhavan, the Governor’s official residence in Bengaluru, just hours before the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) meeting scheduled for 4 pm.

The meeting comes amid intense political activity in the ruling Karnataka Congress following the resignation of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and growing speculation over the party’s next leader in Karnataka.

Governor Gehlot has accepted Siddaramaiah’s resignation and dissolved the Council of Ministers with immediate effect. However, Siddaramaiah has been asked to continue as Chief Minister until a new government arrangement is done.

Shivakumar talks to press

Talking to reporters on Friday, Shivakumar said that the Karnataka CLP meeting would take place in the presence of party observers appointed by the Congress high command.

He said, “A Karnataka CLP meeting will be held in Bengaluru at 4 pm. Our two observers will arrive and oversee the proceedings. They will subsequently consult the party high command before a final decision is taken.”

When asked about his prospects of becoming the next Chief Minister, Shivakumar remained cautious, stating that the decision would depend on the election of the new clp leader.

“I still do not know when they will elect the leader of the Congress Legislature Party. Once that happens, we will discuss the next steps,” he said.

Leadership Transition

The leadership transition follows Siddaramaiah’s resignation on 28 May, which he described as a voluntary decision taken on the advice of the Congress leadership.

In recent days, Shivakumar has held discussions in New Delhi with Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi amid deliberations on legislative leadership, organizational appointments and Rajya Sabha nominations in Karnataka.
