Jalandhar/Phagwara, May 30, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Jalandhar-based RTI activist Simranjeet Singh was shot dead in broad daylight on Saturday near the Law Gate area of Lovely Professional University at Chaheru village in Phagwara.

According to police sources, Simranjeet Singh was attacked by unidentified bike-borne assailants who allegedly opened fire at him from close range soon after he stepped out of his Fortuner SUV. The attackers fled the scene immediately after the shooting.

The incident took place in the Lohgate area under Satnampura Police Station limits. Police officials said Simranjeet Singh died on the spot due to multiple bullet injuries.

A .32 bore pistol was recovered from near the body, while a .12 bore rifle was found inside his Fortuner vehicle parked close to the crime scene.

Jalandhar Range DIG Naveen Singla said police teams reached the spot immediately after receiving information about the incident. He said multiple investigation teams, including Counter Intelligence units, had been deployed to identify and arrest the attackers.

Simranjeet Singh had remained active for several years and was known for filing RTI applications, complaints and petitions involving influential individuals and controversial matters before the Punjab and Haryana High Court, Punjab Police and central agencies.

Simranjeet Singh had earlier alleged that he received a threat call from Anmol Bishnoi, reportedly asking him to stop pursuing a complaint related to an alleged illegal colony on the 66-feet road in Jalandhar. According to Simranjeet Singh, the call was received while he was traveling from Chandigarh to Jalandhar.

He had also released an audio recording of the alleged conversation, claiming that Anmol Bishnoi, younger brother of gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, warned him to withdraw the complaint or face dire consequences, including threats of being shot dead.

He had recently come into public focus after filing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in the Punjab and Haryana High Court challenging the validity of the Jaagat Jot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar (Amendment) Act, 2026. The petition had argued that the legislation required Presidential assent before notification as it allegedly conflicted with existing central criminal laws.

During the hearing of the PIL, Punjab Advocate General MS Bedi had reportedly informed the court that the petitioner was a “habitual” complainant whose name figured in an internal list maintained by the Punjab Vigilance Bureau. The state had also argued that material facts regarding criminal cases allegedly involving the petitioner had been concealed.

Sources further revealed that Simranjeet Singh had allegedly shared certain documents with the Enforcement Directorate concerning Punjab Minister Sanjeev Arora, who is currently lodged in jail.

Police sources said Simranjeet Singh had earlier survived an attack by armed assailants outside a gym in Jalandhar’s Model Town area nearly a year ago. Following that incident, Jalandhar Police had reportedly provided him with two security personnel. However, he was allegedly traveling without security at the time of Saturday’s attack.

A resident of Adarsh Nagar in Jalandhar, Simranjeet Singh had reportedly remarried recently after separating from his first wife.

Senior police officials said CCTV footage from nearby areas was being examined and forensic teams had collected evidence from the scene. Security agencies are also probing possible motives behind the killing, including personal rivalry, ongoing litigations and other angles.

The sensational murder has triggered concern over law and order and the safety of whistleblowers and RTI activists in Punjab.
