DK Shivakumar is sure to become CM, legislature party leader elected on Siddaramaiah’s proposal
Bengaluru: A big change has been seen in the politics of Karnataka, where Congress has changed the leadership and handed over the command of the state to a new face. The party has officially decided that now the new Chief Minister of the state will be DK Shikumar. He was earlier serving as Deputy Chief Minister and will take oath as Chief Minister on June 3.
Before this, the reins of power of the state were in the hands of Siddaramaiah. However, discussions were going on within the party for a long time regarding change of leadership. Ultimately, the Congress high command approved the change and gave shape to the new political system.
When did Siddaramaiah resign from the post of Chief Minister?
On Thursday, Siddaramaiah had resigned from the post of Chief Minister. The very next day, Governor Thawar Chand Gehlot accepted his resignation and with this the entire Council of Ministers was also dissolved. This cleared the way for the formation of a new government in the state.
An important meeting of the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) was held at Vidhana Soudha in Bengaluru on Saturday. This meeting was monitored by senior AICC leaders Venugopal and Randeep Singh Surjewala. In the meeting, all the MLAs unanimously passed a resolution giving the central leadership of Congress the right to select the new leader. This proposal was presented by Siddaramaiah and G. God supported it.
After this, political developments progressed rapidly. Siddaramaiah himself in the meeting D.K. Shivkumar’s name was proposed, which was unanimously accepted by all the MLAs. With this, Shivkumar was formally elected the leader of the Congress Legislature Party.
The discussion also stopped for some time during the meeting, when Siddaramaiah, K.C. Venugopal and Surjewala went to separate rooms for talks. However, after some time the meeting resumed and the final decision was sealed.
In the meeting, Siddaramaiah said that after his resignation it was necessary to select a new leader. Therefore this procedure was adopted. He also admitted that now the responsibility of the party is in the hands of the new leadership.
Appreciation of Siddaramaiah’s tenure
The Congress Legislature Party appreciated Siddaramaiah’s tenure and thanked him. The resolution said that he played an important role in the development of Karnataka while being the Chief Minister from 2013 to 2018 and again from 2023 to 2026. Also describing him as an experienced leader, his contribution was said to be inspirational for the party.
