DK Shivakumar Set To Become Karnataka Chief Minister As Congress Completes Major Leadership Transition – Obnews
Karnataka is set to witness a major political transition as Congress leader DK Shivakumar prepares to take the oath of office as the state’s next chief minister on June 3. The ceremony is scheduled to take place at the Glass House of Lok Bhavan in Bengaluru.
Shivakumar was unanimously elected as the leader of the Congress Legislature Party during a meeting at Vidhana Soudha on Saturday. His elevation clears the way for him to succeed Siddaramaiah, who stepped down after serving as chief minister since the Congress returned to power in Karnataka following the 2023 assembly election.
According to WION, Siddaramaiah formally proposed Shivakumar’s name during the Congress Legislature Party meeting. The proposal received support from senior party leaders and was approved by the legislators. Shivakumar is expected to meet the governor and stake his claim to form the new government ahead of the oath taking ceremony.
The leadership change follows months of speculation surrounding the future of the Karnataka government. Political discussions had continued since the 2023 election regarding a possible internal understanding between Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar over the chief minister’s position. The latest development brings an end to the uncertainty surrounding the leadership transition.

Congress state working president GC Chandrashekhar said the ceremony would be conducted in a simple manner. According to WION, the party has encouraged supporters not to travel to Bengaluru in large numbers, with Shivakumar expected to visit districts personally after assuming office. The approach is intended to reduce traffic congestion and avoid inconvenience for residents.
Attention is now turning to the composition of the new cabinet. Congress leaders are expected to consider regional representation, community balance and internal party dynamics while finalizing the ministerial team. Senior party figures have reportedly held discussions in Delhi as the Congress prepares for the next phase of its government in Karnataka.
Shivakumar’s elevation marks an important moment in Karnataka politics. A prominent Congress strategist and long serving state leader, he will now take charge of the government as the party looks to maintain unity and deliver on its commitments ahead of the next state election.
