Big preparation of Central Government: VIP and government babus will also have to pay toll!

New Delhi: People traveling on the national highways of the country may see a major change in the toll system in the coming times. The Central Government is reviewing the categories which are currently exempted from toll tax. If the proposal is implemented, many VIPs, government officials and departmental vehicles may also come under the ambit of toll charges.

The government believes that in view of the increasing cost of road construction and maintenance, there is a need to make the toll system more effective and transparent. For this purpose, the existing system related to toll exemption is being reconsidered.

There may be changes in the years old system

At present, people holding some constitutional posts in the country and selected government vehicles are exempted from toll tax. Under this system, many government officials and departmental vehicles use national highways without paying toll fees. But now the government is considering limiting or in some cases eliminating this list.

Government may increase revenue

Experts believe that if the number of toll-free vehicles decreases, the government’s revenue can increase significantly. At present, large scale investment is being made on new expressway and highway projects across the country. Construction and maintenance of these projects require continuous financial resources. In such a situation, increasing toll collection can give additional impetus to the development of road infrastructure.

Demand to implement uniform rules

Discussion regarding this proposal has also started among the common people. Many people believe that if common citizens pay toll tax then the same rules should apply to most government and special category vehicles. This will increase equality and transparency in the system.

final decision still pending

At present the government has not taken any final decision on this subject. Suggestions are being taken from various ministries and concerned departments. Only after discussing all the aspects will it be decided how much change will be made in the toll exemption system. If this proposal is implemented, it will be considered a major reform in the toll system of the country, the impact of which can be seen on millions of vehicles and government machinery.
