  • Big excitement with the decision of ‘this’ government

West Bengal The government has taken an important decision to increase transparency in welfare schemes in the state and reduce unnecessary financial burden on the exchequer. In this regard, persons receiving free or subsidized foodgrains under the ‘Khadya Saathi’ scheme of the Department of Food and Supplies, who do not fulfill the eligibility criteria or whose names have been included in the list fraudulently, will be identified.

In an order issued by the Food and Supplies Department on Thursday, action will be taken against the ration cards found ineligible as per the norms, after completion of the Special In-Depth Review (SIR) process. As per the direction of the department, the ration cards of the beneficiaries found ineligible or suspicious during verification will be removed from the records, so as to ensure that only genuine and eligible persons get the benefit of the scheme.

According to the latest directives of the state government, action will be taken to identify and cancel the ration cards of approximately 63 lakh persons who were excluded from the electoral roll during the Special In-depth Review (SIR) process. Authorities have been instructed to take necessary steps in this regard. However, considering the sensitive and legal situation, the order also provided some relief. 15,000 crore government’s strictness on schemes

According to government officials, approximately Rs 15,000 crore is spent annually on the state’s ‘Khadya Saathi’ scheme. Under this scheme, free ration is provided to approximately 2 crore people and paddy is also purchased directly from the farmers. The government fears irregularities and financial irregularities during the implementation of these schemes in previous years. Therefore, it has now been decided to conduct physical verification of all ration card holders.

What will be the verification process?

According to administrative sources, all Sub Divisional Officers (SDOs) and Group Development Officers (BDOs) in West Bengal have been directed to prepare a list of people excluded from the electoral roll in their respective areas. This list will be submitted to the local food department officials and inspectors. After that the food department teams will visit the homes of the affected persons and verify their eligibility. This verification will ensure that the beneficiary really fulfills the criteria for the scheme. On completion of verification, the ration card of those found ineligible will be cancelled. According to sources, the state government has prioritized the campaign and has targeted to complete the entire process by June 15, 2026, so that the benefits of the schemes reach only the genuine and deserving individuals.
