Alexander Zverev Outlasts Jakub Mensik to Setup Thrilling Grand Slam Final Against Flavio Cobolli:
Read, Digital Desk : Alexander Zverev of Germany stands just one victory away from his maiden Grand Slam title having reached the final of the French Open for the second time in three years when he defeated the 26 th seed Jakub Mensik 7-5 6-2 3-6 6-3 on Friday. Germany’s number one has lost three previous Grand Slam finals including the French Open final two years ago, and he has looked like he is set to have the year he will be hoping for in Paris with his excellent form over the last week. It is against the world number 25 Flavio Cobolli the young German will face the final on Sunday. The other semi-final was scheduled between Italy’s Matteo Arnaldi and another young Italian, who has never reached a Grand Slam final in the form of Cobolli, but the second Italian has been forced to pull out through illness meaning that Cobolli advances through to the French Open final.
Set 1, was close and was fiercely contested.
From what we see it looked incredibly tight in the first set played out on court Philippe Chatrier, when with 11 games played Zverev took a break point in the service game of Mensik with a stunning backhand crosscourt winner and then was able to convert that break point by forcing the Czech into the net, and sealed it with a fantastic ace. With the second set Mensik was to quickly lose his serve and appear to find something is going wrong. The Czech sits with a towel on his head on the side of the court but after he received treatment the troubles were to get worse with a return where Zverev then went to a double break up in set 2; however, after he had a long medical time out on a neck injury he fought back. He then moved ahead 4-2 with his serve and some incredible drop shots, and moved on to win set three. Zverev was not to be denied however as he produced a dominant performance to take both the fourth set and the match and book his second French Open final in a row.
