Fact Check: Did Gavi Injure Rodri At Spain Training? Viral Video Raises Concerns Ahead Of FIFA World Cup 2026

Preparations are in full swing at the Spain camp, with the FIFA World Cup set to kick off next week. Under Luis de la Fuente, the Spanish national football team has been tipped to be one of the favourites in this year’s competition. The coach would expect to have the full-strength side throughout the tournament, as any injury could make things complicated for the former World Cup champions. However, a recent video going viral has raised questions over Rodri. The Manchester City midfielder appeared to have hurt his ankle after his Spain teammate Gavi stepped on his foot during a training session.

Spain are slated to feature in one more warm-up game before heading into the World Cup. They will face Peru on June 9, exactly one week before their Group G campaign opener against debutant Cape Verde. La Roja will face Saudi Arabia and Uruguay in the other group-lague fixtures.

Was Rodri injured by Gavi at Spain training?

The incident unfolded supposedly during an intra-squad practice game, with Luis de la Fuente overseeing from the sideline. As Rodri had the ball, Gavi, in his usual demeanour, charged towards his teammate and caught his right foot. Though it was unintentional, Rodri looked to be in pain. He sat on the ground and took some moments before getting back to his feet. It appeared to be just an instant discomfort.

Spain’s Team News and Form Ahead Of FIFA World Cup 2026

As per many fans and pundits, Spain has one of the strongest squads in this World Cup. However, interestingly, no Real Madrid players have been called up by De la Fuente. While Rodri and Pedri take charge of the midfield, Barcelona’s star man, Lamine Yamal, will lead the attack. They have several options for the striker’s role, while David Raya is expected to start as the goalkeeper. The Spain coach will look to try different combinations against Peru before finalising his starting eleven. They drew in the last two friendlies against Egypt and Iraq.
