BCCI’s big plan regarding Shubman Gill, currently away from T20

New Delhi: In IPL 2026, Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill did wonders with the bat. By scoring 732 runs, he was among the most successful batsmen of the season. Despite this, he did not get a place in the Indian T20 team for the tour of Ireland and England. Now the big reason behind this decision of the selectors has come to light.

Full focus will be on Test and ODI

According to PTI report, BCCI and the selection committee have made a long-term strategy for Gill. For the time being, he has been asked to stay away from T20 cricket and focus only on Test and ODI.

Gill is currently the captain of India’s Test and ODI team. In the next one and a half years, the team has to play nine important matches under the World Test Championship. Also, about 35 ODI matches are also in the schedule before the 2027 ODI World Cup. The selectors do not want Gill to become a victim of physical and mental fatigue by playing all three formats continuously.

A source said that the aim of the board is to keep Gill fit and fresh. India has two big goals in the next two years. One is the WTC final and the other is the 2027 ODI World Cup. Therefore Gill’s form and fitness has been given priority.

WTC and 2027 World Cup become priority

The WTC 2025-27 cycle is very important for India. To remain in the race for the final, the team will have to win at least seven of the remaining nine tests. In such a situation, Gill will have a big responsibility as a batsman as well as captain.

Besides, the board has also considered the 2027 ODI World Cup as the biggest mission. Gill’s performance in ODIs in the last few years has been excellent. The board is working on workload management to keep him fit for a long time. The selectors believe that his best performance can play an important role in India winning the IC trophies.

The doors of T20 are not closed

Despite being out of the T20 International team, Gill’s T20 record is strong. He scored 650 runs in IPL 2025. However, he was dropped from the team in 2025 after scoring only 291 runs in 15 T20 matches for India.

According to the report, the doors of T20 are not closed for Gill. The 2028 T20 World Cup and the Los Angeles Olympics are still far away. Therefore, for now his priority will be Test and ODI cricket. The board says that it is difficult to say who will be in what form after two years. At present the plan is till 2027 World Cup.
