Rishabh Pant aims for historical records, can create a new world record in Test cricket
New Delhi . Indian cricket team’s star wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant has reached such a point from where history is waiting for him. In the only Test match being played against Afghanistan in Mullanpur, Pant batted brilliantly on the first day and scored an unbeaten half-century and also stepped towards a big world record. Now he needs only three more sixes to touch the mark of 100 sixes in Test cricket.
By the end of the first day’s play, the Indian team had reached a strong position. Amidst the brilliant centuries of captain Shubhman Gill and vice-captain KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant also demonstrated his aggressive style and scored a half-century. Many attractive shots were seen in his innings, which also included three long sixes. With these sixes, Pant’s total number of sixes in his Test career has reached 97.
If Pant is successful in hitting three more sixes on the second day of the match, he will become the fastest batsman to complete 100 sixes in Test cricket. Currently, this record is in the name of former Australian wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist, who had completed 100 Test sixes in 137 innings. New Zealand’s explosive batsman Brendon McCullum had achieved this feat in 176 innings, while England captain Ben Stokes had touched this figure in 178 innings.
Talking about Rishabh Pant, he is currently playing the 87th innings of his Test career. In such a situation, if he touches the figure of 100 sixes in this match, not only will Gilchrist’s record be broken, but he will also become the first batsman in the world to achieve this feat in less than 100 innings. This achievement can be recorded in his 50th Test match, which will make it even more special.
The record for hitting the most sixes in Test cricket is currently in the name of England captain Ben Stokes, who has hit 136 sixes. He is followed by Brendon McCullum with 107 and Adam Gilchrist with 100 sixes. New Zealand’s fast bowler Tim Southee and West Indies’ fast batsman Chris Gayle are also counted among the top players with 98-98 sixes.
Interestingly, before the Afghanistan Test, the team management has withdrawn the responsibility of vice-captain from Rishabh Pant and handed over this role to KL Rahul. The selectors believe that Pant should focus more on his batting at the moment. It seems that Pant has started responding to this decision with his bat.
The eyes of cricket lovers are now fixed on the second day of the match. Everyone is hopeful that Pant will not only complete his century but will also give another proud moment to Indian cricket by registering a new world record of fastest 100 sixes in the history of Test cricket.
