Rajya Sabha Resignation : Even as the merger talks with the Congress continue, Mamata Banerjee has suffered yet another setback. On Thursday (June 11, 2026), the party’s Rajya Sabha MP Prakash Chik Barek resigned. Interestingly, this is the third MP to resign from the Rajya Sabha in a week. Just a day earlier, on Wednesday, June 10, Sushmita Dev had resigned as a Rajya Sabha MP.

TMC’s strength in Rajya Sabha

There are total 13 MPs in Rajya Sabha of TMC The number has now come down to only 10 after Barek’s resignation. Earlier, senior leaders Sukhendu Shekhar Rai and Dev resigned. There is talk that party chief Banerjee’s problems are continuing. It is said that three more MPs may resign in the coming days. However, it is not yet clear who these names belong to.

These leaders, led by Kakoli Ghosh, may submit a letter of support to the NDA to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla.

Internal split in TMC

When the Election Commission of India (ECI) announced the results on May 4, the TMC had won 80 seats. However, Banerjee herself lost the election. Following this, the TMC expelled Ritabrata Banerjee and Sandipan Saha from the party on charges of anti-party activities. Later, around 60 MLAs rebelled under his leadership. Now this number is said to have reached 64.

Merger with Congress

Following this, the party chief met Rajya Sabha MP Sonia Gandhi, sparking speculation that the Congress had proposed a merger with the TMC.

A subsequent meeting between Abhishek and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi fueled the speculation. Currently, both the TMC and Congress parties have denied any such plans. After being expelled from the Congress in 1997, Banerjee founded the TMC in 1998.
