Congress loses final Rajya Sabha foothold in Gujarat as BJP secures all four seats
All four Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidates contesting the Rajya Sabha elections from Gujarat were declared elected unopposed on Thursday after no opposition candidate remained in the fray, giving the ruling party a clean sweep of the four seats.
The four BJP candidates elected to the Upper House are Rajubhai Shukla, Mukesh Rathwa, Mansingh Parmar and Jitendra Kanjaria. The party had announced their names for the biennial Rajya Sabha elections earlier this month and all four filed their nomination papers within the stipulated deadline.
No contest after withdrawal deadline
The Rajya Sabha election process for the four Gujarat seats was originally scheduled to culminate in voting on June 18. However, with only four BJP candidates remaining in the contest for four vacancies, the election became uncontested following the completion of the nomination and withdrawal process.
Political observers had earlier indicated that the BJP was comfortably placed to win all four seats due to its overwhelming strength in the Gujarat Legislative Assembly. Congress did not field candidates for the seats, making the BJP nominees’ victory virtually certain.
Congress loses representation
The outcome marks a significant political development for Gujarat, as the Congress is set to lose its remaining representation from the state in the Rajya Sabha. The term of senior Congress leader Shaktisinh Gohil, currently the party’s sole Rajya Sabha member from Gujarat, is scheduled to end later this month.
With the BJP securing all four seats, the Congress will have no representative from Gujarat in the Upper House for the first time in decades.
BJP strengthens position
The unopposed election further consolidates the BJP’s dominance in Gujarat, where the party has maintained a strong legislative majority. Party leaders welcomed the outcome, describing it as a reflection of the BJP’s organisational strength and political support in the state.
The newly elected members will succeed outgoing Rajya Sabha MPs whose terms expire on June 21. Their election ensures that the BJP retains complete control over the four seats that were due for renewal in Gujarat during the 2026 Rajya Sabha biennial elections.
The Election Commission and returning authorities will complete the formal certification process before the newly elected members assume office following the expiry of the outgoing members’ terms later this month. The four BJP leaders are expected to take their seats in the Rajya Sabha as part of the upcoming cycle of membership renewals.
