Petrol Containing 22 To 30 Ethanol Exempted From Excise Duty

India has decided to remove excise duty on high volume ethanol blended petrol. This has given a boost on the tax front to the country’s efforts to increase the use of alternative fuels and reduce dependence on imported crude oil. According to a government notification issued on Wednesday (June 10), petrol containing 22% to 30% ethanol will be exempted from excise duty. India, the world’s third largest oil importer and consumer, has taken this decision at a time when it is continuously increasing the use of ethanol in fuel blending as part of its comprehensive energy security strategy.

Excise duty is a tax imposed by the government on certain goods, including fuel. By exempting petrol with higher ethanol content from this duty, the government is making such fuel blends more economically attractive for producers and suppliers. This notification applies to petrol with 22% to 30% ethanol level. The government has not announced any immediate changes to regular petrol sold at retail outlets (petrol pumps), but the decision is expected to boost the development and supply of higher ethanol blended fuels.

India is largely dependent on imported crude oil to meet its energy requirements. Increasing the use of domestically produced ethanol from agricultural raw materials such as sugarcane and grains helps reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels and also reduces the country’s impact on fluctuations in global oil prices.

The Ethanol Blending Program has created an additional market for farmers and also supports the government’s broader objective of improving energy security. India has rapidly increased ethanol blending in petrol over the past decade to reduce oil import costs and promote cleaner fuels.

It is clear from the latest tax exemption that India wants to encourage the use of petrol with higher ethanol content. At the same time, it also shows that the government continues to focus on alternative fuels as the country attempts to strike a balance between growing energy demand and the need to reduce dependence on imported oil.
