Mumbai Mayor furious amid Praneet More controversy, says obscenity should be stopped in the name of comedy

Maharashtra: Amidst the ongoing debate over stand-up comedy, Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde has taken a strict stance on such programs and demanded a complete ban on stand-up comedy shows across the country. He said that the kind of content being presented on some platforms in the name of entertainment can have a negative impact on the youth and children.

Ritu Tawde expressed displeasure about stand-up comedy

Ritu Tawde said that parents spend huge amount for the education and better future of their children, but if the youth receive wrong messages from such programs then it is a matter of concern for the society. According to him, under the guise of humor and entertainment, obscenity, derogatory comments towards women or content that hurts social values ​​cannot be accepted. He said that freedom of expression is an important feature of democracy, but responsibility is also associated with it.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis also reacted on the same issue. He said that any artist or citizen has the right to express his views, but it is necessary to maintain a balance between expression and social responsibility. Fadnavis said that any medium of entertainment should respect the sentiments, culture and decorum of the society.

The Chief Minister also clarified that he personally likes stand-up comedy and it has become a popular medium of entertainment today. However, he said that artists should understand that their words and performances have a wider impact on society. Therefore, it is important to keep social sensitivity and decorum in mind while presenting comedy.

Actually, this whole controversy started after some video clips related to a show of stand-up comedian Praneet More went viral. Controversy arose over alleged objectionable statements related to women, consent and dead persons in these clips circulated on social media. The matter quickly became a topic of discussion and various organizations demanded action on it.

National Women’s Commission is strict

Considering the seriousness of the matter, the National Commission for Women has taken suo motu cognizance. Commission Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar has written a letter to the DGP of Haryana Police demanding immediate action. The commission has also sought a detailed report within seven days and asked to provide information whether an FIR has been registered under the relevant sections or not.

On the other hand, Maharashtra Cyber ​​Department has also started investigation. The department has registered a case against Praneet More, Himanshu Jangra, Dr. Sejal Pawar and other concerned persons. According to officials, the investigation is being conducted under the Indian Justice Code 2023 and the Information Technology Act and notices have been sent to the concerned people for questioning.
