Be alert: UV rays are damaging the eyes not only in the mountains but also in the plains.
New Delhi, June 12. Photokeratitis is a temporary injury caused by UV (ultraviolet) rays on the cornea of the eye, which can also be called ‘sunburn’ of the eye in simple language. Usually it is associated with snowy hilly areas, but today its danger is increasing in the plains including Delhi.
The problem arises due to these reasons
According to Dr. Abhilasha Dhankhar, vitreo-retina specialist and consultant ophthalmologist and cataract surgeon, this problem occurs when the eyes remain exposed to UV rays for a long time. The main reasons for this are increasing UV index in summer, prolonged exposure to sunlight, driving a two-wheeler, outdoor sports and welding without protection. Many people are not aware that UV rays can damage the eyes even in the presence of clouds.
Common symptoms of ‘sunburn’
Symptoms usually appear 6–12 hours after UV exposure. Its common symptoms are pain in the eyes, burning sensation, redness, watering, stinging sensation from light, blurred vision and sensation like sand in the eyes. In most cases this problem resolves within 24–72 hours, but repeated UV damage can have long-term effects on eye health.
99–100% UVA And UVB use protective sunglasses
To stay safe, wear sunglasses with 99–100% UVA and UVB protection when going out. Wrap-around or large-frame glasses provide better protection. Avoid unnecessary exposure to bright sunlight between 10 am and 4 pm. It is essential to wear proper protective eyewear during welding or other industrial operations.
If you have symptoms like sudden severe pain in the eyes, discomfort from excessive light or blurred vision, consult an eye specialist instead of treating yourself. With timely identification and treatment, most patients recover completely.
