Womens T20 World Cup 2026: Sri Lanka has created a big upset in the tournament by defeating New Zealand in the 7th match of ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026. Batting first, New Zealand had set a target of 151 runs for Sri Lanka to win. The Sri Lankan team achieved this target by losing 5 wickets and won against New Zealand for the first time in the history of T20 World Cup. Neelaksika Silva played match winning innings for Sri Lanka. This is New Zealand’s second consecutive defeat in this World Cup 2026. Whereas Sri Lanka has got the first victory.
New Zealand’s batting was quite ordinary
New Zealand won the toss and batted first and scored 150 runs for 6 wickets in 20 overs. New Zealand had a bad start. Opener Isabella Gage was out after scoring only 4 runs, but after this Amelia Kerr along with Georgia Plimmer made a brilliant partnership of 49 runs for the second wicket. Georgia Plimmer was out after scoring 18 runs. After this, Amelia Kerr took control of the team by making an important partnership of 43 runs with Sophie Devine. In the end, Maddy Green scored 18 runs and took the team’s score to 150. For New Zealand, captain Amelia Kerr and Sophie Devine played the maximum innings of 45-45 runs.

Nilakshika Silva played match winning innings for Sri Lanka
Chasing the target of 151 runs for New Zealand, both Sri Lankan openers Chamari Atapattu and Vishmi Gunaratne made a good start. There was a partnership of 45 runs between the two for the first wicket, but then captain Atapattu was out after scoring 27 runs on 19 balls. After this Vishmi Gunaratne also returned to the pavilion after scoring 17 runs in 19 balls.
