FIFA World Cup 2026: Canada’s first win in the World Cup with Jonathan David’s hat-trick, thrashing Qatar 6-0

Vancouver. Jonathan David scored a hat-trick amid a wild cheer as Canada thrashed Qatar 6-0 to record its first win in World Cup football history and almost guarantee a place in the knockout rounds. Two Qatari players received red cards, reducing their team to nine players. The Canadian team took full advantage of this. Homan Ahmed was sent off the field in the first half itself (33rd minute) for a foul on Tajon Buchanan.

After this, at the beginning of the second half, Asim Madibo (51st minute) was shown a red card due to a foul on Ismail’s corner. He injured the lower part of his left leg in the corner, sending the Canadian player off the field. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney was unable to watch the team’s first match in Toronto due to his participation in the G7 summit held in France last week, but he was present in this match. He was sitting with FIFA President Gianni Infantino. Sile Larin scored his second goal of the tournament on a rebound in the 16th minute.

Qatar goalkeeper Mahmoud Abunada punched away David’s volley shot, but the ball fell to Larin, who headed it into the goal. David doubled the lead in the 29th minute with a brilliant volley with his right foot. Canada took a 3–0 lead in first-half stoppage time when David scored on a ball that bounced off the crossbar. Nathan Saliba, who came in his place after Corner was ruled out due to injury, scored a free kick in the 64th minute to make the score 4–0. Qatar’s luck was also not on its side because in the 75th minute, Mohammad Manai scored a suicide goal by dodging his goalkeeper.

David completed a hat-trick in stoppage time. He has become the second player after Argentina’s Lionel Messi to score three goals in a match in this World Cup. Canada played its first match against Bosnia-Herzegovina in a 1-1 draw. Qatar also played a 1-1 draw against Switzerland, a strong Group B team, in its first match. Canada and Switzerland now have four points each in Group B. Canada has reached the top due to better goal difference. Switzerland had defeated Bosnia-Herzegovina 4-1 earlier in the day. Bosnia and Qatar have one point each.
