Kolhapur, 19 June. Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah on Saturday laid the foundation stone for the development works of the famous Karveer Nivasini Ambabai (Mahalakshmi) temple in Kolhapur, Maharashtra. Under this ambitious project costing about Rs 1,500 crore, construction of new Pradakshina Marg (Pradakshina Path) in the temple premises and conservation and renovation of family deity temples will be done. His wife Sonal Shah was also present on this occasion.
Ambabai Temple, one of the 52 Shaktipeeths, is a unique symbol of Indian faith, culture and architecture. Today, the foundation stone of modernization and beautification work of the temple complex at a cost of ₹ 1500 crore was laid. Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister were also present
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde also attended the foundation stone laying ceremony. The three leaders had darshan of Ambabai Mata (Mahalakshmi), one of the 52 Shaktipeeths, and offered prayers. He then inaugurated and inspected various ongoing development projects in the temple complex.
‘Start of historical work in Karveer city’
On this occasion, Amit Shah said that a historic work is being started in Kolhapur, the holy land of Maharashtra and the abode of Mata Ambabai. He said, ‘This is the same Karveer Nagari, where Mata Ambabai has resided for centuries. The work of restoration of the temple and construction of a grand corridor is being started by the Maharashtra government. This has created a wonderful atmosphere of happiness, enthusiasm and devotion among crores of devotees of Mata Ambabai in Kolhapur, Maharashtra and across the country.

Praising the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Shah said that in the last 12 years the country has seen a unique confluence of development and heritage conservation. He said, ‘I am communicating with the people of Maharashtra from the holy land of Mata Ambabai. Along with development under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, our cultural and religious heritage has also got a new identity.
Religious tourism will get a boost
The temple development project is being considered an important step towards further strengthening the religious, cultural and tourism identity of Kolhapur. After the completion of the project, the facilities for the devotees will be better and religious tourism is also expected to get a boost in the area.
