FIH Hockey Women’s Nations Cup: India crushes Chile 6-0 in final, title clash with host New Zealand

auckland20 june. Former champions India continued their fine form in the FIH Hockey Women’s Nations Cup here and entered the final with a thumping 6-0 win over Chile on Saturday. It is noteworthy that the Indian team had earned the title of champion in the first edition of the year 2022 and this time it is again on the threshold of the title with its fourth consecutive win including all three matches of the league stage.

Salima Tete and company will now face hosts New Zealand on Sunday for the title, having defeated the US 4-1 in a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw at regulation time in the day’s second semi-final.

Navneet and Deepika scored two goals each

In the one-sided semi-final played at North Harbor Hockey Stadium, Navneet Kaur (6th and 13th minute) and Deepika (14th and 18th minute) scored two goals each while Neha (32nd) and Rutuja Pisal (39th) scored one goal each for India. Captain Salima Tete, who was chosen ‘Player of the Match’, performed brilliantly.

Talking about the match, the Indian team, ranked ninth in the world ranking, made a great start and world number 11 Chile did not get a chance to recover. It can be easily guessed that with two goals each from Navneet and Deepika, the Asian team had gone ahead by 4-0.

India had a 4-0 lead at half time.

To be honest, the fast pace and pressure tactics of the Indian forward line troubled Chile. Navneet’s team opened its account on the first penalty corner. After that, Salima ran from the left flank and handed the ball to Navneet, who did not make any mistake. Now it was the turn of drag-flicker Deepika, who scored her first goal in the 14th minute and converted a penalty corner four minutes later. She has scored maximum six goals in the tournament so far.

After the interval, Neha scored on a penalty corner and Rutuja gave the final touch to the team’s victory on a reverse hit. Chile created some chances in the last quarter, but India’s experienced goalkeeper Savita made excellent saves and did not allow them to score a single goal.
