Heavy security deployed at Nagarasu Gurdwara as Uttarakhand government rules out communal angle
A tense situation prevailed on Friday evening at Nagarasu Gurdwara in Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand, prompting authorities to deploy a heavy security presence while the state government clarified that a recently reported incident linked to the Hemkund Sahib Yatra should not be viewed as a religious dispute.
According to the Rudraprayag district administration, a disagreement involving around a dozen individuals had been ongoing at the gurdwara since the afternoon. Officials said the situation drew additional attention after the lights at the gurdwara were switched off in the evening, leading security agencies to remain on high alert.
Security tightened around gurdwara
Authorities said a substantial police deployment was made outside the gurdwara to ensure the safety of pilgrims and local residents.
The district administration stated that between 30 and 40 police personnel, along with more than two dozen personnel from the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), were stationed at the site.
Senior officials, including the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) of Rudraprayag, the Tehsildar and senior police officers, were continuously monitoring the situation.
Officials maintained that security arrangements had been strengthened as a precautionary measure and that law enforcement agencies were keeping a close watch on developments.
Government rejects communal interpretation
Meanwhile, the Uttarakhand government issued a clarification stating that the incident should not be given a communal or religious angle.
State Home Secretary Shailesh Bagauli said preliminary findings suggest the matter appears to be a dispute between individuals arising from emotional reactions and differences rather than a conflict related to religion.
He emphasized that Uttarakhand respects all religions and faiths equally and that the state’s cultural traditions have long been based on harmony, peace and mutual respect.
Probe ordered into incident
The Home Secretary said the government would take strict action against anyone attempting to communalise the issue or disturb social harmony.
He informed that the Inspector General (IG) of Garhwal has been directed to conduct a fair and transparent investigation into the matter. Appropriate action, he said, would be taken after hearing all concerned parties and examining the facts.
In addition, the Additional Director General (ADG) of Law and Order has been instructed to submit a detailed status report regarding the incident.
Administration appeals for calm
Authorities have appealed to residents, pilgrims and members of the public to maintain peace and avoid spreading rumours.
The district administration said the situation remained under close observation and that all necessary measures were being taken to ensure public safety and maintain law and order in the area.
