Kolkata: On Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended the main event of the 12th International Yoga Day held in Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal. Around 35,000 people practiced yoga together with the Prime Minister in this grand program held on the historic ‘Red Road’ of Kolkata.
Addressing the people of the country and abroad on this occasion, PM Modi spoke about the benefits of yoga and said that yoga has become the biggest means of connecting the entire world today.
“Look like 50 at 70” – PM Modi’s mantra
The Prime Minister gave a speech of about 15 minutes during the program. Referring to aging and physical fitness, he said:
“Our goal should be to be more flexible at age 40 than at age 20 and feel more energetic at age 50 than at age 30. If we make yoga a part of our life, it is possible to look as young and agile as we did at age 50 at age 70.”
PM Modi further said that yoga is no longer limited to a single religion or country, but it has become the biggest community festival in the world. It weaves different countries, peoples and cultures into one thread. He reminded that June 21, which is considered to be the longest day on earth, has now made its mark as ‘Yoga Day’ all over the world.
The Prime Minister himself performed 4 main postures
After the speech, Prime Minister Modi himself sat on a yoga mat and practiced yoga with thousands of people present there. He specifically practiced 4 asanas and taught people their correct ways:
- Tadasana: To keep the body balanced and the spine straight.
- Ardha Chakrasana: To strengthen back flexibility and respiratory system.
- Bhadrasana: To calm the mind and stabilize the body.
- Trikonasana: To stretch the muscles of the whole body and reduce fat.
This time theme: “Yoga for Healthy Aging”
Special theme of 12th International Yoga Day “Yoga for Healthy Ageing” has been kept The main purpose of this theme is to convey the message to the world that yoga is not only for youth or physical fitness. Yoga is the best and safest way to maintain physical, mental and emotional health as one ages. It also makes old age happy and healthy by reducing the effects of aging.
The event held at Kolkata’s Red Road was a huge success, where apart from common people, many prominent personalities also participated.
