Fastag will end, GPS toll will come; Money will be deducted directly from the bank account! Know the complete math of GPS toll system
Government introduced FASTag to save time of passengers on Indian highways. But now the technology is going further. Government of India is soon to replace FASTag with ‘Satellite Based Toll System’ (GNSS/GPS Toll). In this new system, there will be no need to stop or scan the vehicle at the toll booth.
How does this system work??
In this new technology, an ‘on-board unit’ (OBU/Personal Tracking Device) will be mounted on the vehicle’s windshield or dashboard. Newer cars will come with this in-built, while older cars will have to retrofit it. When your car enters the highway, the space satellite (India’s indigenous ‘navigation’ system) will come into direct contact with your car. The exact number of kilometers you have traveled on the highway will be accurately measured. As soon as you exit the highway, the money for that distance will be automatically deducted from your GPS-linked bank account or digital wallet.
Its biggest advantage is the ‘pay-as-you-use’ rule. Currently, FASTag charges for the entire phase, whether you travel 2 km or 20 km on the highway. But in the new system, you will have to pay for the same distance as you use the highway.

What to do in case of technical glitch?
Since GPS is a digital system, it is natural to experience internet range or technical errors. If a glitch in the system results in more deductions for less travel, no need to worry. A special ‘Grievance Redressal Centre’ and helpline number ‘1033’ of National Highways Authority (NHAI) will be available for this purpose. Refund can be obtained by providing bank statement and travel details.

Also, the device will store offline data in areas where there is no internet range and the exact amount of toll will be deducted when range is restored. If your device is turned off, cameras on highways will scan the number plates and collect tolls.
