Tushar Mehta again becomes Solicitor General of India, Central Government extends appointment for 3 years
digital desk- The Central Government has approved the reappointment of Tushar Mehta as Solicitor General of India for a further three years. This appointment will be effective from July 1, 2026 or until further orders, whichever is earlier. According to the order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has given green signal to the proposal of Tushar Mehta to continue in the post of the country’s second highest law officer. This is the third time that Tushar Mehta has been reappointed to the post of Solicitor General. After serving as Additional Solicitor General, he was appointed Solicitor General of the country for the first time in October 2018. After this, the Central Government extended his tenure to 2020 and then to 2023. With this latest extension, Mehta has completed almost 8 years as Solicitor General and by the end of the new term, he will complete 11 years in the post, making him one of the longest serving law officers in the history of the country.
The main face of the central government in the Supreme Court
As Solicitor General, Tushar Mehta has strongly represented the Central Government in many important constitutional, policy and criminal matters before the Supreme Court and various High Courts. The Solicitor General, one of the most prominent legal officers of the Central Government, advocates important and sensitive cases in the apex court and Mehta has represented the government in many major historical cases.
Re-appointment of other ASGs in Supreme Court and Delhi High Court
Along with Tushar Mehta, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has also approved the reappointment of five Additional Solicitors General (ASG) to the Supreme Court for a three-year tenure. In this, the reappointment of Vikramjit Banerjee and KM Nataraj will be effective from July 1, while the reappointment of SV Raju, N Venkataraman and Aishwarya Bhati will be effective from June 30, 2026. Apart from this, re-appointment of Additional Solicitor General for Delhi High Court, Chetan Sharma, has also been approved, whose tenure will be for 6 months from July 1, 2026 or until further orders.
