What happened in the 80 minute meeting? Iranian officials left the conversation midway
New Delhi: The first round of high-level meeting between the US and Iran, held in Switzerland with the aim of calming the months-long Middle East tension, ended without any concrete results. After the recent interim agreement between the two countries, this talk was being considered a major step towards ending the four-month-old conflict. This very first meeting was very tense, where serious differences between the two sides on the issue of Lebanon came to the fore.
Iran’s terms
Vice President JD Vance was leading the American delegation in this important peace talks. From Iran’s side, Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi took command. Just before the main meeting, the Iranian delegation held separate discussions with mediators from Qatar and Pakistan.
Iran accused America
Iran clarified that further progress in talks with the US depends on how well Washington implements the terms of the interim agreement on the ground. Iran accused America of completely failing to implement the ceasefire on all fronts, the first and most important condition of the agreement. The direct proof of which is the ongoing Israeli military action in Lebanon.
Things got worse due to Trump’s social media posts
In this meeting which lasted for about 80 minutes, mainly serious topics like giving relief in economic sanctions and releasing the frozen assets of Iran were being discussed. But in the middle of the talks, a social media post by US President Donald Trump spoiled the atmosphere. Trump warned Iran through the post to control its allied groups in Lebanon. The Iranian delegation was extremely angry with Trump’s statement and walked out of the meeting for some time in protest.
What Vice President JD Vance said
Later, Iranian Parliament Speaker Ghalibaf said that America should be careful in its rhetoric, because Iran’s army is ready to respond to any aggressive situation. However, US Vice President JD Vance termed this impasse as normal and said that such ups and downs keep coming in difficult diplomatic negotiations. He also added that President Trump has given instructions to move forward with a new approach to improve relations.
surge in oil prices
The bitterness in the meeting increased to such an extent that the Iranian representatives flatly refused to have the traditional symbolic handshake and joint photograph. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has given clear indications that the presence of the Israeli army in southern Lebanon will remain intact for the time being. Netanyahu said that Israel will not vacate the buffer zone created for its security until necessary. Acknowledging his differences with Trump, he said that Israel is a sovereign nation and it is not necessary for the two leaders to agree on everything.
market impact
This diplomatic deadlock arising in America-Iran talks has had a direct impact on the global market. There has been a rise in the prices of crude oil in the international market, due to which Brent crude has become costlier by more than $1 and has crossed $81 per barrel.
