devastation in venezuela

According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the first earthquake had a magnitude of 7.1, with its epicenter at a depth of 13 kilometers in the ocean near the Venezuelan coastal city of Moron. Just a few minutes later, a second and more destructive aftershock of magnitude 7.5 was felt, whose epicenter was located 16 kilometers away from Moron and at a depth of only 10 kilometers.

Due to low depth, the impact of the devastation was quite widespread. The sky was filled with dust in many areas of the capital Caracas as buildings housing restaurants and shops began to collapse.

buildings collapsed like cards

The most terrifying scene of the earthquake was seen in the Altamira area of Caracas, where a huge 22-storey building was completely razed to the ground. People standing near the pile of debris were seen calling out the names of their family members, while volunteers and rescue workers continued searching for people buried under the debris.

Odalis Escalona, a bank employee, said that the stairs broke, there were deep cracks in the walls and things started falling from the roofs like debris, which was a very scary experience.

The administration appealed

In view of the seriousness of the situation, Venezuelan Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello has appealed to citizens to immediately come out of their homes and buildings. He said that in view of the danger of aftershocks, people should not go inside the weakened buildings at the moment.

For safety reasons, the administration has stopped gas supply in many residential areas so that no major accident like fire due to debris occurs. The Home Minister has also requested people to take special care of children and the elderly and to give way to emergency vehicles like ambulances.
