Two powerful earthquakes hit Venezuela, more than 10 thousand deaths feared

Caracas. Two consecutive strong earthquakes in Venezuela have created a fear of huge devastation. There have been reports of collapse of buildings in many areas including the capital Caracas, while thousands of people came out of their homes and offices and took to the streets. USGS i.e. United States Geological Survey has warned that the death toll in this disaster may exceed 10 thousand.

The first earthquake in Venezuela was a magnitude 7.1 earthquake, whose epicenter was west of the Morón region on Venezuela’s Caribbean coast. The depth of the earthquake was recorded at about 22 kilometers. Shortly after this, another powerful shock was felt, which spread panic among the people.

  • Earthquake’s impact on Amazon city

According to a report, earthquakes of 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude shook the entire area. Even in cities like Amazonas in Brazil, about 1,700 kilometers away, buildings had to be evacuated. Late Wednesday night, Acting President Delsey Rodriguez said she was preparing to address the nation.

Politicians and Venezuelans criticized Rodríguez for not addressing the nation within three hours of the earthquake, and for the government not reporting any injuries or deaths during that time.

    Intensity changed in a moment

The US Geological Survey (USGS) initially said that the first earthquake was of 7.1 magnitude, which was later changed to 7.2. Its center was west of the Moron region on the Caribbean coast, which is about 168 kilometers west of Caracas. The depth of the earthquake was 22 kilometers. Just one minute later, the USGS reported an even larger earthquake of 7.5 magnitude. The depth of the second earthquake was 10 kilometers and its epicenter was 16 kilometers south-west of Moron.

    people were stunned

These earthquakes in Venezuela were among the most powerful earthquakes to hit Venezuela in more than a century. People came out of shaking buildings in the capital Caracas. Many people were shocked to see that entire walls had fallen down and the furniture of the house was visible from the road itself. Clouds of dust were also seen in two areas of the capital, where restaurants and other businesses are usually bustling.
