FIFA World Cup 2026: Egypt-Iran match 1-1 draw, Egypt reaches knockout

Seattle. In the final match of Group G of the FIFA World Cup 2026, a thrilling match between Egypt and Iran ended in a 1-1 draw on Saturday.

With this result, Egypt reached the knockout stage by finishing second in the group, while Iran’s hopes of making the last-32 rest on joining the best third-placed teams.

The start of the match was very fast. Egypt took the lead in the fifth minute with a goal by Mahmoud Saber. After this, Iran got a penalty in the ninth minute, but Mehdi Taremi could not convert it into a goal. Egyptian goalkeeper Mostafa Shubeir made a brilliant save.

However, Iran hit back after just five minutes. Milad Mohammadi’s first attempt was stopped by Shubeer, but on the rebound, Ramin Rezaian sent the ball into the net in the 14th minute to make the score 1-1.

In the second half, both the teams made continuous efforts to win. Iran got many good chances in the last minutes. In stoppage time, Shoja Khalilzadeh even headed the ball into the goal and the Iranian players started celebrating, but after review by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR), he was found to be offside and the goal was cancelled.

On the other hand, in the second match, Belgium defeated New Zealand 4-1 and secured the top position in the group. Due to this, Egypt slipped to second place.

Now Egypt will face Australia in the last-32. At the same time, Iran will now have to wait for the results of other groups. If it remains among the best eight third-placed teams, it could face Switzerland.
