Serious allegations against Snapchat: Case filed against Snap in case of sexual harassment of 12 year old girl, know the whole case

Snap, the parent company of social media platform Snapchat, is once again in the midst of legal disputes. In a court in the US state of Missouri, a family has filed a serious lawsuit against Snap and a person named Gabriel Joel Valentin-Rios. The family alleges that Snapchat’s features directly helped a 25-year-old adult man find their 12-year-old innocent daughter, trap her and sexually assault her. Let us tell you that the accused Valentin-Rios has already legally confessed to the crime of rape and he is currently serving an 18-year jail sentence.

How did this whole thing start?

According to the complaint, this whole story started in the year 2021. At that time the girl was only 11 years old and she had started using the Snapchat app without telling her parents. Although Snapchat’s rules state that users must be at least 13 years of age to use the platform, the lawsuit claims that the app’s age verification was so weak that children could easily create accounts by tricking it, and the children knew this very well.

What serious allegations has the family made on Snapchat?

The victim’s family has raised many big questions on Snapchat’s process system and its features. The main allegation of the family is that the Snapchat system itself took the initiative and showed the accused Valentin-Rios the profiles of that girl and other girls from nearby schools as ‘friend suggestions’. Whereas the accused had no prior connection or acquaintance with those girls. The platform never warned the girl about how dangerous it could be to connect with an unknown adult.

Obscene content and inability to block

The family alleges that after contact, the accused started sending obscene pictures and messages to the girl. According to court documents, the girl did not want all this and did not even respond initially, but the design of the app was such that she could not protect herself from all this nor did she find any effective way to block it. It is alleged that Snapchat’s ‘Snap Maps’ feature shared the exact location of the girl’s house with the accused without her knowledge. After which the accused had described himself as a 17 year old school student, whereas he was 25 years old. He was running multiple accounts on Snapchat and was using one account specifically to target minor children. The family says that Snapchat was aware of this, yet the company did not take any action against it.

Relationship created by coaxing

After a long period of mental coaxing, the accused convinced the girl to meet him, where a painful incident of sexual assault took place. After this accident, the girl is in deep shock and is suffering from PTSD, severe anxiety and depression. Now the family is demanding compensation and wants the court to order Snapchat to improve its systems.

What does Snapchat have to say on this?

Amidst these serious allegations, the company has defended itself and said that it is serious about the safety of its users. According to Snap, they have invested heavily in several security features, awareness tools, partnerships with experts and the help of law enforcement agencies to prevent wrongdoing and abuse on the platform.

Increasing legal pressure on Snapchat

This Missouri case is not an isolated one. Lawsuits are going on in many states of America regarding the safety of children on Snapchat. In 2024, the state government in New Mexico filed a lawsuit against Snap, alleging that the design of its app promotes sexual exploitation. SNAP tried to have the case dismissed, but the court rejected their application. Apart from this, there are cases pending against Snapchat in Vermont for sexual harassment of 12 year old girls.
