Overheating such pans can emit toxic fumes and, if scratched, can leach harmful chemicals such as PFOA and PFAS into food. These chemicals are responsible for hormonal imbalance and weak immune system.

Healthy options: Using stainless steel, cast iron, glass or ceramic cookware does not cause such damage.

Aluminum foil
When sour or acidic foods are wrapped in aluminum foil at very high temperatures, harmful metallic elements can leach into the food. Long-term exposure increases the risk of neurological problems and Alzheimer’s. It is also non-biodegradable, hence not only harmful to health but also to the environment.

Healthy options: Use parchment paper instead of aluminum foil for baking and glass or silicone containers for heating food.

Plastic food containers
Old or low-quality plastic containers can release harmful chemicals like BPA, BPS and phthalates, especially when they are heated in the microwave or come into contact with oily, sour and hot foods. It damages hormones, affects fertility and weakens the immune system. Black plastic is often made from recycled electronic waste, so can be toxic.

Healthy options: Glass, ceramic or stainless steel containers. It is best not to heat food in plastic containers even if they say ‘microwave safe’.
